Aloha, August! August 2023 Dog Days bright and clear, Indicate a happy year; But when accompanied by rain, For better times, our hopes are vain. What Are the Dog Days of Summer? The ancient origins of this common phrase might surprise you. The term “Dog Days” traditionally refers to a period of particularly hot and humid weather occurring during the summer months of July and August in the Northern Hemisphere. This period of sweltering weather coincides with the year’s heliacal (meaning “at sunrise”) rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Majoris—the “Greater Dog”—which is where Sirius gets its canine nickname, as well as its official name, Alpha Canis Majoris. Home Sales to California & Japanese Buyers in Hawaii Hawaiʻi home sales to buyers from California took off during the pandemic and peaked in 2021. The trend didn’t last though, and now the numbers are below even pre-pandemic levels, according to first quarter 2023 data. Meanwhile, the number of homebuyers from Japan, though still barely a third of pre-pandemic totals, is slowly rising, according to an analysis of first quarter homebuyer data from Title Guaranty Hawaii. Audiences can look forward to renditions of familiar symphonic hits as well as music from the stage and screen including Jupiter from Gustav Holst’s The Planets, selections from The Sound of Music, Jurassic Park Theme, and much more. Some of Hawai'i's best slack key guitar players will perform selections of melodious Hawaiian music. Kī hō`alu, translating literally from the Hawaiian as "loosen the key," indicating the tuning in slack key guitar technique, is a musical tradition dating back to 19th century paniolo who played around the campfire after completing a day of ranch work.
