GOLF COURSES & GOLF COURSE PROPERTIES ON OAHU (Part Two)
/Welcome Back to Part II of our Series on Golf Course Homes on Oahu! As mentioned previously, Oahu, Hawaii is a great location for golf lovers! There are over 40 public, municipal and private courses on Oahu to choose from. No matter where you live, there is at least one golf course nearby. We return now with information about golf courses and golf course communities in West Honolulu (Moanalua/Salt Lake) and Central Oahu (Aiea, Pearl City, Mililani, Waikele, Waipahu)
Below is an overview of the golf courses and golf course community options in these areas, organized by area of the island:
West Honolulu
Golf courses in West Honolulu & Central Oahu are plentiful. However, none of these areas offer a golf community, where membership comes with homeownership. The Moanalua Golf Club is a public golf course, in Honolulu, though on the more Western side of the city. It is the oldest golf club on the island and the oldest West of the Mississippi, established in 1898. The Moanalua Golf Club offers a 9-hole layout, with two sets of tees. The course features Bermuda grass on its fairways and greens, known for its demanding layout with out-of-bounds areas, trade winds, and a meandering stream that tests players' precise tee shots and iron play. The club provides a challenging yet fair test for all skill levels and includes practice facilities and a clubhouse with dining.
There are many single family homes in this area which currently range in price from about $900K to $1.8M. Condos/townhomes are from about the mid 600’s to about $900K. Golf course frontage homes in the area are mostly condos in the Moanalua Village townhomes. A few single family homes with golf course frontage rarely come up in the Moanalua Gardens neighborhood. Moanalua is convenient to the freeway system, and is near Kaiser Moanalua Hospital, Fort Shafter Army Base, Tripler Army Medical Center, a Home Depot, and various industrial businesses.
The Salt Lake neighborhood is Moanalua’s neighbor, separated only by H-201, so if you live either neighborhood, you can easily enjoy both the Moanalua Golf Club and the Honolulu Country Club which is smack-dab in the middle of the Salt Lake area. The Honolulu Country Club is the only private, members-only club in this area. Established in 1977, it features a championship golf course designed by Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane, requiring precision over distance with strategically placed water hazards. The club also offers a full-service clubhouse with dining, locker rooms, a pro shop, and event facilities, as well as a swimming pool.
There is a small strip mall shopping center, including a Safeway grocery store and a few restaurants, in Salt Lake and well-regarded Moanalua HS is there, as well. There are both single family homes and a multitude of condos in the Salt Lake neighborhood, but none are specifically associated with the Country Club. The prices range from about $150K for a Salt Lake studio condo to about $1M for a 3/2 golf course view townhome. Single family homes in the Salt Lake area range from just above $1M to about $2.6M.
Joint Base Pearl Harbor / Hickam
There are three golf course options, open to eligible Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) patrons only, on the Navy and Air Force Join Base Pearl Harbor /Hickam in West Honolulu. The Kealohi Golf Course, the Navy/Marine Golf Course, and the Malama Bay Golf Course.
The Kealohi Golf Course is a beautifully lit, par-3 golf course which is the only military course in Hawaii that lets you play at night. This 9-hole golf course includes: Practice facilities (practice chipping green and putting green); fully-stocked pro shop, rental equipment - clubs and pull carts available, and 10th Puka Lounge.
The Navy Marine Golf Course Located less than one mile from Pearl Harbor, this course is rated among the military's top ten courses in the world! It is located across Nimitz Highway from the Honolulu Airport and just 25 minutes from Waikiki. This popular, centrally-located 18-hole championship golf course has a well-maintained layout with recently renovated greens, tees and bunkers. It also has water features on three holes as well as many mature trees. The course includes a driving range and practice facilities, and a fully-stocked pro shop.
The Malama Bay Golf Course is an 18-hole golf championship course with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and majestic Diamond Head. The course features a driving range, chipping and putting greens. The pro shop is loaded with a wide variety of golf accessories and rentals. There are PGA professionals on staff who are able to give lessons to golfers of all levels. And golfers and non-golfers alike can enjoy breakfast, lunch and the stunning view at the open-air snack bar.
Living and/or working on the PearlHarbor-Hickam Joint Base base makes these courses convenient. But also MWR eligible patrons living in any of the other non-military base communities mentioned in this blog post will also find these golf courses to be conveniently located.
Pearl City / Aiea
There are more options for golf course communities as we head slightly further North & West on H-201 to H-1. Formerly the Pearl Country Club, Pearl at Kalauao is a public golf course, nestled within the Kalauao ahupua‘a (land division). This is an 18-hole golf course in Aiea, designed by Akira Sato. The par-72 course offers challenging play with rolling terrain, fast greens, and scenic views of Pearl Harbor and the Waiʻanae mountains, featuring Norfolk pines, coconut palms, and monkeypod trees. It has recently undergone renovations to enhance its facilities and honor its history within the community.
There is a lot of commerce in this area and nearby, Pearlridge Shopping Center is the only large shopping mall for this part of the island, making living in the Pearl City/Aiea areas very convenient. You’ll also find many grocery stores, a Home Depot, Office Depot, Best Buy, and similar big box stores, as well as many small businesses and restaurants of all sorts. Several condominiums and townhomes front the Pearl at Kalauao course, including Colonnade on the Greens, Ridgeway, and Tropicana Village, which have views of and frontage to this golf course property. Single family homes in the areas of Aiea and Pearl City range from about $800K-$1.9M. Townhomes range from $400K-$900K, and condos range from the $200K’s to the mid-$700k’s.
Mililani
If you head West on H-1 and then North on H-2 from Aiea you will reach the Mililani Golf Club. The Mililani Golf Club is a public, 18-hole championship golf course in central Oahu, designed by Bob Baldock and opened in 1966, offering a "beloved heaven" atmosphere with views of the Koʻolau and Waianae mountains, tree-lined fairways, and water hazards. The par-72 course features lush tropical foliage, a driving range, and practice greens, providing a tranquil escape, suitable for all skill levels.
Townhome-style golf course properties fronting this course include: Mililani Pinnacle, Kuahelani Apts, and Fairway Village. There are also a very limited number of single family homes in the Mililani Area region which have golf course frontage. Single family homes in Mililani run from the mid-800K’s to about $1.9M.
Waipahu (Waikele / Kunia)
If you stay on H-1, after the H-2 exit, and head a little further West, you can reach the The Waikele Country Club, a public golf course, in Waipahu. Townhomes with frontage on this course include: Greens at Waikele, Village on the Green, Fairway Village - Waikele. There are also a variety of single-family homes in the Waikele neighborhood that have golf course frontage.
If you continue West on H-1 and head a little further North you will reach the Royal Kunia Country Club, also in in Waipahu. The Royal Kunia Country Club features an 18-hole public golf course, designed by Robin Nelson, that offers challenging play for all skill levels with spectacular panoramic views of the south shore, including Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head. Located high above the Ewa Plains, this par-72 course features rolling fairways, numerous bunkers, and six water features, making for a picturesque and strategic round. It is a popular option for both local and visiting golfers, known for its impressive scenery and value, though wind and a potentially slow pace of play are factors to consider.
There are some single family homes which front this public golf course, but listing of these are very few and far in between. Homes in the Kunia area range from the mid-800’s to about $1.4M. Townhomes and condos in Kunia range from about $400K-$600K.
Ted Makalena Golf Course, also in Waipahu, is a municipal course, which has single family homes fronting the course on Awanei and Awamoku Streets. But again, these seldom come available. There are no private, membership-only golf clubs in Central Oahu.
